The Large Knowledge Collider (LarKC) Project

The aim of the EU FP 7 Large-Scale Integrating Project LarKC is to develop the Large Knowledge Collider (LarKC, for short, pronounced “lark”), a platform for massive distributed incomplete reasoning that will remove the scalability barriers of currently existing reasoning systems for the Semantic Web.

This will be achieved by:

  • Enriching the current logic-based Semantic Web reasoning methods with methods from information retrieval, machine learning, information theory, databases, and probabilistic reasoning.
  • Employing cognitively inspired approaches and techniques such as spreading activation, focus of attention, reinforcement, habituation, relevance reasoning, and bounded rationality.
  • Building a distributed reasoning platform and realizing it both on a high-performance computing cluster and via “computing at home”.

This tutorial was based on similar successful tutorials:

Following the previous 3 LarKC tutorials, we propose to have the 4th LarKC Early Adopters Tutorial in Beijing, China in Nov 13th, 2010. It is one day before the LarKC project Beijing meeting. The aim of this tutorial is to enable participants to the get access to early research results and technologies from the LarKC project. This tutorial will be mainly focus on Chinese Semantic Web researchers, developers, and companies.

Having completed this tutorial, participants will have the basic skills required to develop their own plug-ins for the LarKC platform and run their own experiments on the LarKC platform. We also expect to have more external contributors outside the LarKC consortium after this event.

Program (Tentative)

The LarKC 4th early adopter’s tutorial will cover but not limited to the following contents:

  • 9:00 – 9:30 Introducing the Large Knowledge Collider (LarKC)
  • 9:30 – 10:00 Coffee break
  • 10:00 – 10:30 The Architecture of the LarKC Platform
  • 10:30 – 11:00 Hands-on 1: Setting up the Platform within Eclipse and run the simple Workflow
  • 11:00 – 12:00 Hands-on 2: Extending the simple workflow by adding additional plug-ins
  • 12:00 – 13:30 Lunch and break
  • 13:30 – 14:30 Hands-on 3: Making a new plug-in and adding it to the Workflow
  • 14:30 – 15:00 Coffee break
  • 15:00 – 15:20 Introduction to Distributed Processing in LarKC
  • 15:20 – 16:15 Hands-on 4: Speeding things up: extending the Workflow with Hadoop
  • 16:15 – 16:30 Urban Computing Demo
  • 16:30 – 17:00 Closing and Open Discussion

Tutorial Speakers (Tentative)

Tutorial Speakers and all the hands-on instructors are all LarKC Consortium members. They are from:

  • STI Innsbruck, University of Innsbruck, Austria.
